Matthew Ryan Dotson

I’m Matthew Ryan Dotson, a dedicated photographer based near Metro Detroit, passionate about capturing the essence of life, arts, and culture across Southeastern Michigan and Northwest Ohio, including Detroit, Monroe, Ann Arbor, Toledo, Ypsilanti, and Downriver.

Photography has always been a part of my life, inspired by my Dad who was constantly behind the lens. This early exposure sparked my own curiosity for seeing the world through different perspectives—always through glass, always searching for something compelling. Over the years, this passion has grown into a professional pursuit, where I specialize in event photography and gonzo photojournalism.

With a keen eye for the unusual and the meaningful, I strive to tell stories through my photographs, whether it’s capturing the chaotic energy of a live concert event or the quiet moments that often go unnoticed. My goal is to bring narratives to life, making the viewer feel as if they are part of the scene with me.

Writing & More

In addition to photography, I am an experienced writer. My background ranges from writing detailed technical documents to engaging blog posts across various industries. My writing compliments my photographic work, allowing me to offer a unique blend of visual storytelling enhanced by narrative depth. Currently, I am focusing on expanding my portfolio into more photojournalistic and event-based photography projects.

Join My Journey

Each image I capture is a piece of a larger story, and I am eager to share these stories with you. Whether you are looking for a photographer to capture the essence of your next event or a writer who can bring your story to life, I am here to help.

Beyond the camera, music is another profound passion of mine. I lead two one-man bands, each with its own unique sound and style. White Ashes is an instrumental project that fuses elements of psychedelic rock, downtempo, cinematic funk, and art rock. My music draws inspiration from a variety of influences, mainly 70s progressive rock, creating a sound that feels both nostalgic and distinctly modern. Though I am the primary force behind White Ashes, playing guitar, bass, keyboards, and occasionally drums, I have collaborated with talented session musicians from time to time.

My second band, The Slime Tutorialz, dives into an Americana-influenced sound of surf rock, exotica, and rockabilly. I put a creative twist on Broadway and popular songs, delivering performances that are both kooky and unconventional. This band allows me to explore a lighter, more playful side of music, while still delivering serious musicianship and performance energy.

Music, like photography, is about storytelling and emotion. Through both my bands, I aim to connect with audiences, evoke feelings, and create memorable experiences through recorded tracks.
